How could we find the answer to this?

Sometimes it helps if you think of decimals like money.

The dollar can be represented in parts and those parts can be shown in decimal form.

But next we need to see if we understand without the money representation.

Once you understand place values it’s pretty simple.

Quick Maths are great brain workouts. Once we know why we’re doing the math we do, we can explore even more ways to do the same math. Sometimes we can teach ourselves mental math. Mental math means we do most of, or the entire, calculation in our heads. Pretty awesome!

This can seem a bit tricky.

We’re not finding the exact answer. We’re checking for a possibility.

I actually did this problem 3 times before I had all my calculations correct.

It’s good to play with numbers. This is how we build our number sense. Pick another number and give it a try.

Math takes thinking, and questioning. It’s in that thinking place where we let our brains explore that we find our way into math. Notice I did not say, we find our way through math. That’s because if we want to learn math, we can’t charge through it, we need to be in it. Just like scientists. Think of archeologists, they explore, and dig deep to find answers. That’s where we need to go with math. Always exploring and digging deeper.
